A great deck starts with quality decking materials. And these days, there are a wide range of excellent decking materials to choose from. So for this week’s blog we thought we’d run through five of the most popular options, their benefits and some of their drawbacks.
1. Natural Wood
For many homeowners natural wood is the ‘natural’ choice. It’s durable, attractive and offers the most pure-wooden aesthetic. It’s also (when maintained) very long-lasting. It does however require upkeep, which won’t be a problem for handymen and women, but if you’re looking for a set-and-forget option it may be worth looking elsewhere.
2. Composite Decking
Composite decking uses a combination of different components to create a deck that is both good looking and low maintenance. It does not need to be treated yearly; a wash with detergent is usually enough to keep it looking its best. In addition to this, composite decking does not rot, crack, peel or splinter.
3. Bamboo Decking
An increasingly popular alternative, for those concerned about their environmental impact is bamboo decking. Bamboo has a short rotation cycle of 4-6 years for cutting, and harvesting does not affect bamboo’s capacity for regrowth over the following year. This makes it highly-sustainable, low-carbon and more environmentally friendly.
4. Wood Plastic Composite Decking
While many prefer the authenticity of genuine wood decking, wood plastic composite can offer real benefits. It’s termite resistant (making it perfect for termite prone regions), it requires very low-maintenance, and because it won’t rot, crack or splinter it’s incredibly long-lasting. With a natural timber look, wood plastic decking is an attractive and practical alternative to traditional wood decking.
5. Aluminum Decking
Suitable for harsh climates, aluminum decking is a good option for those living in bushfire prone areas. Like other alternatives to wood, it is easy to clean and easy to maintain. It’s tough, durable and won’t splint, rot or warp. It is also available in a range of stylish and unique finishes.
