Whether your outdoor living area is a private oasis or mostly used for entertaining guests, outdoor lighting brings your space to life. If you’re after subtle mood lighting, you might opt for spotlights or candlelight. Or maybe you would like a vibrant, bright area. Regardless of what you prefer, we have listed seven types of outdoor lighting for you to potentially set up in your backyard.
Scatter lanterns around your patio or hang them from the roof of your pergola. This will create a soothing ambience; you’ll feel like you’re camping in the comfort of your own backyard. For a more authentic look, choose a gas lantern; or for a safer and lighter option, look for a rechargeable lantern. Paper lanterns are an affordable, and add visual appeal as they come in many shapes and sizes.
For an inexpensive and innovative project, buy scented tea candles and pop them in a jar. You may also want to add stones, sand or Epsom salts as a base to add some visual appeal. Use a wire (or a piece of a wired hangar) and pierce the top of the lids and twist the ends. This way you can hang them from branches in the trees or hang them off your pergola.
Feel like you’re living in a fairy tale by wrapping fairy lights around your patio fence, tree trunks or along the door frame. They can be flashing or static, depending on your mood. This will look great to visitors; your backyard will look like it’s sparkling.
Adding Tiki torches around your patio will make you feel like you’re on a tropical island. Be whisked away in your own backyard as you look at the flame flickering discreetly. You can fill a pot with soil or stones and place a few torches in it to make your own Tiki tree. Or you can place them into the soil of your backyard. Just beware of the open flames; don’t put them somewhere they can be easily knocked.
Install light fixtures along the outside of your house or hang them from your pergola. For a rustic, modern look, search for industrial style shades. These look sleek and won’t get in the way while you’re entertaining or setting up for a dinner party.
Place spotlights at the base of trees and foliage; the light will bounce off the leaves, creating a great looking effect. Alternatively, place them beneath the benches on your deck. These won’t be too bright for your neighbours either – don’t feel guilty visiting a loved one outside until the wee hours of the morning.
Whatever style of lighting best suits you, you can create your own atmosphere for your family and guests. If you have a patio, you can hang lights from the pergola or wrap them around the surrounding fence.
